The Battle Continues!

Congratulations to the whole team for bringing home GOLD form the Dragonbattle Asia – IDBC Mixed category. For sure you’ve already seen the epic winning video.

The following is the summary report by our Vice-Captain Aoife Murray:

Gaelic Dragons headed to battle in five categories last Saturday. Our crew of 15 paddlers competed in Feather Weight Open, Heavy Weight Open, National Unified Mixed, Ladies and IDBC Mixed events. After the first battle or two we got accustomed to the strange pool paddles, with really narrow blades (described by one of our paddlers as like “trying to paddle with a straw”), battled hard and worked as a team to do our very best.

Last year, Gaelics won silver in the IDBC Mixed event and we were determined to do one better this year. We had a great day, returning home a little battle-scared (lost voices and some bruised derrières) but with some amazing bling! Like any race, Dragon Battle takes a bit of organisation. Everyone on the team, paddlers and our amazing supporters, played their part to help make the day a success. I’m sure I’ll forget somebody (sorry), but particular thanks to the following people:

– Sladjan and Andrew who arrived early to secure a prime tent location, then helped with getting drinks and snacks from Fair Price and handing out goodie bags and race tags

– Alena for sneaking off from the party for a while to tidy up and clear the rubbish from our tent (and for her first race as a Gaelic Dragon!)

– Zai, who came as a supporter and ended up as the team mascot and official poolside counter, helping to make sure we all stayed in time during battle

– Michael and Briyah for some awesome video footage of the later battles from the rooftop above the pool

– Amy for collecting all the lost property at the end of the night

– Jenny for turning up with some home-baked treats in the afternoon

– Dani for the on-site physio consultations!!

Thanks to the whole team of paddlers and supporters for cheering on all our teams, keeping us entertained during the category 1 delays and proving that Gaelics are a team to be reckoned with on and off the water!

Regular and Race Training

Wednesday – 6.30 a.m.

Saturday – 2.45 p.m.

Sunday – 9 a.m.

Attention: Non-senior crew!

As part of the preparation for SRR, we are conducting additional training sessions for the next 3 Saturdays and on holiday of Deepavali (Oct 18th, Wednesday).

The training is designed to have the crew for each boat/category to train together. The tentative lineup has been planned and will be sent out soon. So based on the signup, the training plan for each boat will be determined.

We only have 3 weekends left before the last Singapore race of the season. Please make time to attend as much training as possible.

Note: NO SATURDAY LAND TRAINING for the next 3 weekends.

Current categories we have for SRR:

– IDBC Open & Women

– SRR Mixed, Open & Women

Please visit this Google sheet link to sign up for the extra training sessions.

Everyone, please do take note of the following training procedure to be followed when you arrive at the cage:

1. Register for attendance

2. Take a paddle, PFD(life vest), and bum pad.

3. If you don’t have your own water, please take 2-3 bottles of water that the team is providing.

4. Help prepare the boats for training. If you need guidance on where to go or what to do, please ask any of the regular members or your captains.

Note: We are trying to lessen the use of plastic bottles for training, please help us do this by bringing your own water and reusable containers. And please, do not leave food in the cage. Even if you have it inside your bag, which you think the scavengers will not find.

David Beattie Memorial Newbie Day

11 November

We are excited to announce that starting this year, we will have the David Beattie Memorial Day!

David M. Beattie is the founding father of the Gaelic Dragons and has been an inspiration to many. We are inviting all the Gaelic Dragons to join us on this day to commemorate what our founding father has built. This will be a day of races and games, with a mix of a reunion for the ‘ol Gaelic members, and a newbie day that will be held at Kallang beach. On the day, there will be special readings to be done and a ceremony.

Apart from this, we would need volunteers to sign up as a sub-committee for this event. The sub-committee will be in-charge of the fun races and games, and assist Mandy Irvine for the Newbie Day. Please fill this Google form out to sign up.
